Objectives & Rules

PHYSIOLOGY COURSE OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this course are to provide a clear and thorough practical working knowledge of the Physiology of major systems within the human body as well as to have students to apply this knowledge to problems and case studies relevant to clinical physiology.

RULES OF THE PHYSIOLOGY COURSE

  1. The physiology course covers two semesters and includes lectures (provided online), seminars, and laboratories.
  2. All classes are obligatory. Only illness proved by a doctor or similar serious excused absence is allowed. An excuse must be provided within a week following the absence. All excused absences must be made up according to the teacher’s decision.
  3. Students are assessed using a test form. There are small tests (multiple-choice, 20 questions, four distractors, one correct answer): 5 in the first semester and 4 in the second semester. The signed and filled answer card is the only document considered for the evaluation of the test. Test results (in coded form) are announced the next day on the Departmental website.
  4. Students have to be prepared for classes. For example, before the seminar, students must watch/listen to the lecture and read the appropriate part of the textbook; before the laboratory, students must read the “Physiology lab manual”.
  5. Failed small tests can be retaken at the end of the semester if the average of all tests is less than 60% (see p. 5). The only possibility to take the test later is an excuse as written on p. 2.
  6. Credit is based on proper attendance (see p. 2), test results (average of all tests must be at least 60%), and passing the practical exam. Students who do not reach the 60% level have to pass the end-term (credit) test. There are two terms of this test (i.e., one re-take) at the end of the course.
  7. To get credit in the Physiology course, a positive grade from the final practical exam is indispensable. To be allowed for the practical exam, the conditions listed in p. 2 must be fulfilled. The conduction of this exam depends on actual epidemic conditions.
  8. The final exam consists of 70 questions. The first retake consists of 60 questions, and the second retake consists of 50.
  9. Final grade is based on the result of the exam (A – >85%, B – 76-84%, C – 60-75%, F – <59% on the first take; B – >80%; C – 60-79%; F – <59% on retakes) and overall estimation of student’s progress and attitude.
  10. Students have the right to controvert questions of the exam, providing the written form during the next day (24 hours).
  11. Students have to appear on time for classes. A lateness of more than 15 min. is considered as unexcused absence.
  12. During laboratories, students have to wear protective lab coats.
  13. During laboratories, safety rules must be obeyed. No eating in the laboratory is allowed.
  14. Students have the right to view their small tests as well as all answer sheets under the supervision of the teacher.
  15. Students have the right to consult with the teacher at given office hours.
  16. Exemption from the course is possible under the following conditions:
    a) student has completed a course of corresponding program with the same or more number of hours not earlier than two years before beginning education at the Medical University of Silesia
    b) student has passed the final exam at first attempt with the final grade at least B
    c) student positively passes the short oral exam led by the Chief of the course
