PHYSIOLOGY COURSE OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this course are to provide a clear and thorough practical working knowledge of the Physiology of major systems within the human body as well as to have students to apply this knowledge to problems and case studies relevant to clinical physiology.

RULES OF THE PHYSIOLOGY COURSE

  1. The course in physiology spans two semesters, incorporating online lectures, seminars, and laboratory work.
  2. All classes are compulsory. Absence will only be excused with a verified medical explanation. Documentation should be submitted within one week of the absence. The teacher will determine the requirements for make-up work for all excused absences.
  3. In order to pass the physiology course, students will need to attend all lab and seminar classes (see p. 2 for exemptions), achieve a minimum score of 60% on the cumulative small tests taken throughout the academic year, pass the practical exam, and pass the final exam.
  4. Students are required to come to class prepared. Prior to each lab session, students should read the relevant chapters in the "Physiology lab manual," as indicated by the practical topics. Prior to seminars, students should watch/listen to the lecture and read the corresponding textbook sections relevant to the seminar's topic. Detailed information on laboratory practical exercises and seminar topics is available on the fizjologia.sum.edu.pl website.
  5. The grade awarded to a student for their laboratory classes will be based on their understanding of the topic, practical skills, and performance in all procedures. Students who are unprepared for class or fail to participate in practical exercises may be required by the teacher to complete make-up laboratory assignments.
  6. Student progress is assessed during the academic year via “small tests”. Every seminar's subject matter will be assessed through a short quiz (multiple-choice, 20 items, with a single correct answer). The signed and completed answer card represents the sole document for test evaluation. Coded test results will be available within three working days. Small quizzes are not eligible for re-takes. The sole option for rescheduling the test is a justification outlined in the paragraph 2. Students who do not obtain a 60% score are mandated to complete the end-term credit test upon course completion, but before practical exam. Only one opportunity is available for a student to retake the failed end-term credit test.
  7. For admittance to the practical examination, students are required to have full attendance during laboratory and seminar sessions (exemptions detailed in paragraph 2) and a yearly average grade of 60% or higher on all tests. A passing grade on the final practical exam is required to be eligible for the subject's final exam.
  8. The practical exam grade constitutes 5% of the final grade in “Physiology”.
  9. The final exam will be a multiple-choice format. The final exam will take place either in-person or remotely via the SUM e-learning platform. The format of the final assessment is subject to current epidemic conditions.
  10. The final examination will be administered in a multiple-choice format, either in-person through the Department of Physiology or remotely via the SUM e-learning platform.
  11. The final grade will be determined by the Head of the Department, based on the outcomes of the final exam and their subsequent evaluation.
  12. Students are required to be punctual for classes. Arrivals exceeding 15 minutes past the scheduled time will be recorded as unexcused absences, potentially resulting in exclusion from class by the teacher. The student is required to retake the class.
  13. The use of protective lab coats is mandatory for students in laboratories. Students who are not wearing lab coats will be prohibited from entering the laboratory. The student is required to retake the class.
  14. Safety procedures are obligatory in laboratory environments. Consumption of food and beverages is prohibited in the laboratory. Students are required to maintain laboratory equipment and are financially liable for damages resulting from negligence.
  15. Students may consult their teacher during office hours, as announced in the first class.
  16. A student is authorized to review all of their submitted paperwork retained by the teacher.
  17. Course exemption is possible if the following criteria are met:
    a) student has completed course of corresponding program with the same or more number of hours
not earlier than two years before beginning education at Medical University of Silesia
    b) student has passed the final exam at first attempt with the final grade at least B
    c) student positively passes the short oral exam led by the Chief of the course
  18. In the event of a disagreement between a student and a teacher, the student may appeal to the Department Head.
